retold
2020
Retold is an abstract kinetic sculpture. It performs processes of categorizing and writing information by using dark and light sand as narrative material.
The perception of our reality is based on what we know and how we interpret what has happened. History is formed by different actuators.
When we look back in time, it becomes evident how different human forces have shaped our world through their actions and their worldviews of good and evil. How are events "re-told"?
Our human-made archives still reproduce these truths and transfer them to our technological tools.
Natural archives such as sedimentary strata and tree rings represent a different way of documenting events in time.
In search of objectivity and new perspectives for writing truth, "Retold" stages a historiographical process.
The binary model of separating information in black and white is combined with the model of natural archiving by layering material.
The choreography starts in separating the mixed material in white and black. Tree rings from a felled berlin tree serve as information to be retold.
